One piece of career advice I wish I had received earlier was how to build a professional presence.

When I first entered the workforce, I assumed that doing good work would be enough. While strong work is important, it is only one part of building a career. People also need to understand who you are, what you care about, and what value you bring.

Today, building a professional presence is more important than ever. Whether you are a student, graduate, career changer, or experienced professional, your online and offline presence can create opportunities long before you submit an application or attend an interview.

Building a professional presence is not about becoming an influencer or constantly promoting yourself. It is about being intentional about how you show up, communicate, and contribute.

Find Your Direction

Before building a professional presence, it helps to have a sense of direction.

You do not need a detailed five-year plan, but it is useful to think about the areas that interest you most. What topics do you enjoy learning about? What skills are you developing? What kind of work would you like to be known for?

Having a general direction helps you make decisions about where to invest your time and energy.

For example, if you are interested in marketing, technology, or communications, you might choose to follow industry leaders, engage with relevant content, and share your own thoughts and experiences as you learn.

Your professional presence should evolve alongside your career. It does not need to be perfect from day one.

Be Visible Online

Many employers, clients, and collaborators will search for you online.

That can feel intimidating, but it is also an opportunity.

Platforms like LinkedIn allow you to showcase your experience, interests, achievements, and professional journey. A complete profile with a clear headline, updated experience, and thoughtful content can help people understand your background quickly.

You do not need thousands of followers to have a strong professional presence.

Instead, focus on sharing useful insights, celebrating your achievements, supporting others, and participating in conversations that matter to your industry.

Consistency matters more than visibility for visibility’s sake.

Create Something That Reflects Your Work

One of the best ways to build credibility is to create something that demonstrates your skills.

This could be:

A portfolio website
A blog
A newsletter
Case studies
Projects
Presentations
Research or writing

Creating and sharing your work allows people to see your skills in action.

It also gives you something valuable to reference during applications, interviews, and networking conversations.

You do not need years of experience to start building a body of work. Some of the most valuable projects are the ones that show how you think, learn, and solve problems.

Build Relationships, Not Just Connections

Professional networking often gets a bad reputation because people associate it with collecting contacts or asking for favours.

In reality, networking is about building genuine relationships.

Take time to engage with people in your field, support their work, ask thoughtful questions, and contribute where you can.

Some of the most valuable opportunities in my own career have come from conversations, communities, and relationships that developed over time.

Focus on being helpful and curious. Opportunities often follow.

Continue Learning

The world of work changes quickly.

New technologies, industries, and ways of working emerge all the time. Maintaining a professional presence means continuing to learn and adapt.

Whether it is developing technical skills, improving communication, exploring AI tools, or staying informed about industry trends, continuous learning demonstrates growth and curiosity.

You do not need to know everything.

You simply need to stay open to learning.

Final Thoughts

Building a professional presence is not about creating a perfect image.

It is about developing a reputation that reflects who you are, what you care about, and the value you bring to others.

Start small.

Update your LinkedIn profile. Share something you have learned. Create a portfolio. Join a professional community.

Over time, those small actions build into something much bigger.

Your professional presence is not built in a day. It is built through consistent effort, meaningful contributions, and a willingness to keep showing up.
